In the far interior of south-central Africa, the great Zambezi River emerges from the Caprivi Swamps and flows eastwards through a broad flat bottomed valley. The river, except where interrupted by the occasional rapids is placed and smoothly flowing. Then, with very little advance warning, the river falls into a vast chasm stretching from side to side of its bed, forming the largest curtain of falling water known anywhere in the world. Thence the Zambezi, compressed in places almost to one-thirtieth of its former width, flows on an angry tortuous course through a deep rocky gorge that traverses some of the wildest and most unfrequented country in this part of Africa, before emerging into a more open valley now flooded by waters of Lake Kariba. It is with the detailed description and explanation of this great waterfall known to local people as Mosi-oa-Tunya, loosely translated as "The smoke that thunders" and its fascinating environs that REAL TOURS AND SAFARIS is concerned. In 1855 Dr David Livingstone was the first European visitor and gave them the name of Victoria Falls by which they are today generally known.
